Europe’s major football leagues are currently on an international break, with the Premier League also taking a pause to make way for international fixtures. With five matchdays already played and the next league matches not scheduled until 10 October, this is the ideal time to take a look at what has happened so far.
Although there are still a huge number of matches to be played before the end of the season, the opening matchdays have already started to reveal some interesting trends. Manchester City and Arsenal have taken the top positions, Brighton have emerged as one of the biggest positive surprises, while teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are still looking for greater consistency.
At the bottom of the table, Tottenham are experiencing a particularly difficult start and currently sit in last place, alongside two other teams that are also struggling to pick up points.
Manchester City and Arsenal are starting to stand out
When we look at the table after five matchdays, Manchester City and Arsenal are the first names to appear.
Manchester City lead the Premier League with a perfect record of five wins from five games. The team have won every match played so far and have 15 points, showing from the outset that they intend to compete for the top positions in the competition once again.
Just behind them are the current champions, Arsenal, with four wins from their opening five matches. The Gunners have 12 points and remain close to the leaders, continuing to establish themselves as one of the main contenders in the title race.
Despite the excellent starts made by both teams, there is one interesting detail: Arsenal have already suffered a heavy defeat this season. The Gunners lost 3-0 to Brighton, a result that came as a surprise given the dominance shown by the opposition.
Even so, Arsenal quickly bounced back and remain among the standout teams of these opening matchdays.
Brighton are the big positive surprise
If Manchester City and Arsenal represent the contenders many expected to find at the top, Brighton are probably the biggest surprise of this early stage of the season.
The team currently sit third, with three wins and just one defeat from their first five matches. More than their position in the table, it is some of the results Brighton have achieved that have caught the eye.
The 3-0 victory over Arsenal was one of the biggest surprises of the opening matchdays. The team also thrashed Coventry 5-0 and looked ruthless in a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Brighton’s only defeat came against Chelsea, in an entertaining game that ended in a 4-3 victory for the Blues.
In other words, Brighton have already faced some important opponents and shown that they can compete on an equal footing in demanding matches. It is still far too early to know whether the team can maintain this level throughout the season, but their start is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are looking for consistency
Not all of the big teams have enjoyed such consistent starts to the season.
Liverpool are an interesting case. The Reds have not lost any of their five matches so far, but they have drawn three and therefore sit only sixth. With two wins and three draws, the team remain unbeaten but have already dropped six points along the way.
Alexander Isak has been one of Liverpool’s main attacking players. The Swedish forward has already scored four goals and sits second in the Premier League’s scoring charts, behind only Erling Haaland.
Chelsea have also made an inconsistent start to their campaign. Despite securing some important results, including their 4-3 victory over Brighton, the Blues have yet to find the consistency needed to move closer to the top positions.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are in an even more difficult situation. The Red Devils have just one win from their first five matches and currently sit 12th.
The 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City on the opening day is one of the results that helps explain this inconsistent start. With only five matchdays played, there is still plenty of time to recover, but United already know they cannot afford to keep dropping points if they want to move closer to the top positions.
Tottenham’s start is becoming a concern for their fans
If there is one team with particular reason to be concerned at this stage, it is Tottenham.
The Spurs sit bottom of the Premier League with just two points from five matches. To make the situation even more worrying, the team have scored just two goals and conceded eight.
The context is particularly delicate because Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation last season. Now, their start to the new campaign has once again put Spurs in a difficult situation and raised an inevitable question: can the team avoid relegation again?
It is still far too early to draw any definitive conclusions. Five matchdays represent only a small part of a 38-game season, and a good run of results can quickly change the table.
However, Tottenham will need to react quickly. The longer they go without a win, the greater the pressure on the team could become and the harder it may be to recover ground during the second half of the season.
Coventry and Fulham are also in the relegation zone
Joining Tottenham in the relegation zone are Coventry and Fulham.
Coventry, newly promoted to the Premier League, are already experiencing the difference in quality and demands of England’s top flight. Their 5-0 defeat to Brighton is one of the heaviest results suffered by the team so far.
Fulham currently complete the bottom three and will also need to find a way to recover in the coming matchdays to avoid becoming involved in a battle no club wants to face.
Even so, unlike Tottenham, these teams still have plenty of time to turn things around. With only five matchdays played, the gap to the other positions can still be closed with a good run of results.
Haaland leads the race for the Golden Boot
In the individual standings, Erling Haaland is once again at the top.
The Manchester City forward has scored five goals in the opening five matchdays and leads the Premier League’s scoring charts. The Norwegian is maintaining the starring role he has become known for in English football and is one of the main reasons behind City’s excellent start.
Just behind him is Liverpool’s Alexander Isak with four goals. The Swede has been one of the Reds’ main attacking threats and will be looking to continue scoring to help the team turn their several early draws into victories.
With only five matchdays played, the race for the Golden Boot is still completely open. However, Haaland has already made it clear that he intends to remain one of the competition’s leading stars.
There is still a long way to go
It is important to remember that this table represents only the beginning of the season. Five matchdays can reveal trends, but they are still not enough to determine who will challenge for the title, who will finish in the European places or who will be relegated.
Manchester City’s and Arsenal’s excellent starts put both teams in a strong position, while Brighton have emerged as one of the biggest surprises and shown that they can cause problems for bigger opponents.
At the same time, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United will need to find greater consistency if they want to move closer to the top positions. At the bottom, Tottenham need to react quickly, while Coventry and Fulham are looking to pick up points and escape the relegation zone.
The players will now have a few days to represent their national teams before club football returns. The Premier League returns on 10 October, and the international break gives teams the opportunity to recover, address problems and prepare for the next run of matches.
When the ball starts rolling again, expectations will be high. Can Manchester City maintain their perfect record? Will Arsenal continue to chase the leaders? Can Brighton remain among the top teams? And, at the other end of the table, will Tottenham finally turn things around?
