Didier Drogba – Ivory Coast
Didier Drogba is one of the most iconic African strikers in football history. Born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in 1978, he became known for his physical strength, aerial ability, finishing skills and memorable performances in decisive moments.
Unlike many football stars, Drogba did not establish himself as a professional while still a teenager. He began his senior career in France with Le Mans before moving to Guingamp and Marseille. His performances at Marseille, particularly in European competitions, attracted the attention of Chelsea, who signed him in 2004.
At Stamford Bridge, Drogba became a true legend. His ability to hold up the ball, create chances for his teammates and score decisive goals made him one of the most feared strikers in the Premier League. Across his two spells at Chelsea, he scored 164 goals in 381 appearances, helping the club win four Premier League titles, along with several domestic cups.
The most memorable moment of his career came in 2012, when Chelsea won their first Champions League title. In the final against Bayern Munich, Drogba scored a late equaliser and then converted the decisive penalty in the shootout. It was a performance that confirmed his reputation as a player capable of shining on the biggest stage.
Drogba also enjoyed a remarkable international career with Ivory Coast, scoring 65 goals in 105 appearances for his national team. He played in three editions of the World Cup and helped the Elephants reach the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2006 and 2012.
His legacy goes far beyond the trophies he won. Drogba became a symbol of Ivorian football and one of the most influential African figures of his generation.
Samuel Eto’o – Cameroon
Samuel Eto’o was one of the most prolific and complete African strikers of his generation. Born in Nkon, Cameroon, in 1981, he combined speed, intelligent movement and clinical finishing, making him a nightmare for any defence.
Eto’o began his football journey in Cameroon before moving to Spain at a young age. He joined Real Madrid’s youth setup and went on several loan spells, including to Leganés and Espanyol, before establishing himself at Mallorca. His performances earned him a move to Barcelona in 2004.
At Barcelona, Eto’o became one of the key figures in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. He scored in two Champions League finals, helping the Catalan side lift the trophy in 2006 and 2009. During his time at the club, he also won three La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey.
In 2009, Eto’o moved to Inter Milan in a deal that also involved Zlatan Ibrahimović. Under José Mourinho, he played an important role in the historic 2009/10 season, when the Italian club won Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.
Eto’o’s international achievements were equally impressive. He won the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2000 and 2002, as well as an Olympic gold medal at the Sydney Games in 2000. He also became one of the leading goalscorers in the history of the continental African competition.
Named African Footballer of the Year four times, Eto’o combined extraordinary individual talent with an impressive collection of team trophies. His success at Barcelona and Inter makes him one of the leading contenders for the title of the greatest African striker of all time.
George Weah – Liberia
George Weah holds a special place in football history. Born in Monrovia, Liberia, in 1966, he went from a humble childhood to a career that made him one of the biggest stars in world football.
Weah began his professional career in Liberia, representing clubs such as Young Survivors, Mighty Barrolle and Invincible Eleven. He later moved to Cameroon, where his performances for Tonnerre Yaoundé attracted the attention of European clubs.
He made his breakthrough in Europe at Monaco, where he worked under Arsène Wenger. He later played for Paris Saint-Germain, helping the French club win the league title in 1994 and establish itself in European competitions.
In 1995, Weah signed for AC Milan and became one of Serie A’s leading strikers. His combination of speed, strength, dribbling and finishing made him extremely difficult to stop. He helped Milan win two Italian league titles and became known for spectacular goals, including an impressive solo run against Verona in 1996.
It was also in 1995 that Weah achieved a historic milestone. He became the first African footballer to win the Ballon d’Or, one of the most prestigious individual awards in world football. In the same year, he received the FIFA World Player of the Year award and was named African Footballer of the Year for the third time.
Throughout his career, he also represented Chelsea, Manchester City and Marseille before ending his professional playing career at Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates.
Despite his extraordinary success at club level, Weah never won a major international title with Liberia. Even so, his individual achievements helped change perceptions of African footballers on the international stage.
Weah’s story goes far beyond goals and trophies. He remains one of the most influential figures in African sport, proving that a player from Liberia could reach the very top of world football.
Mohamed Salah – Egypt
Mohamed Salah has established himself as one of the best African players of the modern era. Born in Nagrig, Egypt, in 1992, he began making a name for himself at a young age, starting his professional career at El Mokawloon.
His performances attracted the attention of European clubs, leading him to join Swiss side Basel in 2012. Salah impressed in European competitions before moving to Chelsea in 2014. However, his first spell in English football proved difficult, and loan moves to Fiorentina and Roma in Italy played a key role in his development.
At Roma, Salah rediscovered his best form and showed that he could consistently combine speed, creativity and goals at the highest level. Liverpool signed him in 2017, and the Egyptian quickly became one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League.
Salah’s impact at Anfield has been extraordinary. He helped Liverpool win the Champions League in 2019, scoring in the final against Tottenham, and played a key role in their 2019/20 Premier League triumph, the club’s first title in the competition since its rebranding in 1992. He later helped the Reds win the English league title again in 2024/25, along with other domestic trophies.
His individual achievements are equally impressive. Salah has won several Premier League Golden Boots and became Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer in the competition. His ability to cut in from the right, move into central areas, create chances and finish with both feet has made him one of the most consistent attacking players of his generation.
For Egypt, Salah has carried much of the team’s attacking responsibility. He helped the national team reach the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2017 and 2021, although he did not win the trophy on either occasion.
His longevity, goalscoring records and major trophies place Salah among the most successful African strikers of all time. His journey also serves as an inspiration to young footballers across Egypt and the African continent.
Sadio Mané – Senegal
Sadio Mané is one of the most successful African forwards of the modern era. He became known for his speed, work rate, intelligent movement and ability to deliver in decisive moments.
Born in Bambali, Senegal, in 1992, Mané grew up dreaming of becoming a professional footballer. He moved to France as a teenager and joined Metz, where he began his European career. His performances earned him a move to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, where he developed into one of the most exciting young prospects in European football.
In 2014, Mané joined Premier League side Southampton. His speed and direct style of play quickly attracted attention, particularly after he scored a hat-trick against Aston Villa in just over two minutes, setting a Premier League record at the time for the fastest hat-trick.
Liverpool signed him in 2016, and the Senegalese forward became a key part of one of the most feared attacking trios in modern football, alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. Mané helped the Reds win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2019/20. In 2022, he also won the FA Cup and the League Cup before leaving the club.
Mané continued his career at Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga in the 2022/23 season, before moving to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Nassr.
The biggest international achievement of his career came with Senegal. In 2022, Mané helped his national team win the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in its history. In the final against Egypt, he scored the decisive penalty in the shootout and was named Player of the Tournament.
In the same year, Senegal qualified for the World Cup in Qatar. However, an injury prevented Mané from taking part in the competition, despite his continued importance to the national team.
His legacy also extends beyond the pitch. His charitable work in Senegal, including support for education and healthcare in his hometown, has made him an important figure both in and outside football.
With major European trophies and a historic achievement for his national team, Mané has secured his place among the most influential African strikers of all time.
