The FIFA World Cup 2026 is already starting to take shape at Premier Bet, and this is just the beginning of a long build-up to kick-off. From now on, we will closely follow everything related to the biggest football tournament on the planet, with content designed to keep you informed and engaged until the first whistle.
The 2026 edition promises to be historic, not only because of its competitive level, but mainly due to major changes in its format. With more teams, more matches and a redesigned structure, the competition becomes more inclusive, longer and even more unpredictable.
A World Cup unlike anything we’ve seen before
The next World Cup will be hosted across three countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. Beyond the geographical scale, the biggest highlight is the expansion in the number of participating teams.
Until 2022, the traditional format featured 32 teams. In 2026, this number rises to 48 teams, a significant change that directly impacts the entire structure of the tournament, from the group stage to the knockout rounds.
This change has been driven by FIFA with the aim of making the competition more global and representative, allowing more countries the opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage.
Group stage: more teams, more groups and greater balance
With the increase to 48 teams, the initial stage of the tournament has also been restructured. Instead of the traditional 8 groups, the competition will now feature 12 groups. Check the groups and fixtures here.
Each group will still consist of 4 teams, maintaining a similar logic to previous editions, but with more groups and, consequently, greater competitive diversity.
This new model increases the likelihood of seeing unprecedented matchups and gives space to national teams that, in previous editions, would have had greater difficulty qualifying.
Qualification system: more opportunities to advance
Another key change lies in the qualification criteria for the knockout stage. Previously, only the top two teams from each group advanced. Now, the system becomes more flexible:
- The top two teams from each group qualify directly
- The 8 best third-placed teams also advance
In total, 32 teams move on to the knockout stage, creating a more dynamic and competitive scenario. This format reduces the margin for error and keeps more teams in contention during the group stage.
Introduction of the round of 32
With more teams progressing, a new knockout round is introduced: the round of 32.
This is one of the main elements that distinguishes the 2026 edition from previous ones. Instead of moving straight to the round of 16, qualified teams must overcome an additional knockout round before entering the traditional elimination phase.
This extra stage increases the number of decisive matches and makes the path to the final more demanding and unpredictable.
World Cup 2026: A longer path to the title
Another direct consequence of the new format is the increase in the number of matches required to win the trophy.
While previous editions required 7 matches to become champions, in 2026 teams will need to play 8 matches to lift the title. With more games, endurance could play an even more decisive role in determining the world champion.
More matches, more excitement and an expanded schedule
In total, the competition will feature 104 matches, a significant increase compared to the 64 matches of previous editions. For fans, this means more high-level football over several weeks, with a volume of matches that promises to keep interest high from start to finish.
The impact on African national teams
With the expansion in the number of spots, the African continent gains even more relevance in the global context of the competition. There are 10 African nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, increasing both representation and the continent’s competitive potential.
The qualified African teams are: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
For African fans, this edition represents a real opportunity to see teams from the continent consistently reaching the later stages.
