The wait is almost over. The Premier League 2026/27 starts on 21 August, and football fans around the world are already preparing for another season of big matches, rivalries and plenty of excitement.
After a season in which Arsenal won the English title again, the Gunners begin the new campaign with the task of defending their crown. However, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool also have high ambitions and have made important moves in the transfer market in an attempt to close the gap at the top.
With the transfer window still open until September, some squads could undergo further changes in the coming days. Even so, it is already possible to identify some of the main trends for the new season.
Arsenal begin their title defence
Arsenal head into the 2026/27 Premier League season as defending champions and, naturally, are among the leading contenders to lift the trophy once again.
Mikel Arteta’s side have kept a strong core from the title-winning squad and have looked to add quality in key positions. One of the main new arrivals is Bruno Guimarães, signed from Newcastle to strengthen the midfield, while Christos Tzolis arrives from Club Brugge to provide new options in attack.
On the other hand, Arsenal have said goodbye to players such as Leandro Trossard, who has joined Besiktas, and Jakub Kiwior, who has moved to FC Porto.
The Gunners’ mission is clear: maintain the consistency shown last season and prove that their title win was not an isolated achievement. With Arteta in charge and another highly competitive squad, Arsenal begin the season under the pressure that comes with being at the top.
Manchester City aim to reclaim the throne
After finishing behind Arsenal last season, Manchester City enter the new campaign determined to regain the Premier League title.
The club are, however, going through an important period of transition. Enzo Maresca has taken charge and will be responsible for leading a team that has undergone several significant changes during the summer.
The main signing so far is Elliot Anderson, who has joined from Nottingham Forest in a major transfer. The English midfielder is seen as an important part of City’s new project and could play a key role in midfield.
The club have also signed young players such as Jeremy Monga from Leicester City and Mathys Detourbet from Troyes.
At the same time, City have lost several important names. Bernardo Silva has joined Real Madrid, while Nathan Aké has also left the club.
The big question will be how the team adapts to its new manager and the changes within the squad. With plenty of talent and the experience of players accustomed to competing for trophies, Manchester City remain one of the main Premier League contenders.
Manchester United want to take the next step
Manchester United also head into the new season with high expectations.
After finishing third in the last Premier League season and securing a return to the Champions League, the club now want to turn that progress into a regular place among the contenders for English football’s biggest trophies.
The transfer market has brought Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans, signed from Aston Villa. Both midfielders add quality, experience and creativity to an area that will be crucial to United’s ambitions.
The club have also said goodbye to several important names like Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia.
With Champions League football back on the calendar and a squad renewed in several positions, the challenge will be maintaining consistency throughout what promises to be an even more demanding season.
Liverpool begin a new chapter
Of the four major contenders we are highlighting, Liverpool have probably undergone one of the biggest transformations.
After a disappointing season, the Reds have lost several key figures. Mohamed Salah has left the club, while Andy Robertson has joined Tottenham and Ibrahima Konaté has moved to Real Madrid.
To compensate for these departures, Liverpool have invested in new talent. Jérémy Jacquet, from Rennes, and Víctor Muñoz, signed from Osasuna, are among the main new arrivals during this transfer window.
The team will therefore have to find a new balance after the departure of players who have played hugely important roles in recent years.
Liverpool still have plenty of quality within the squad, however, and will need to turn the disappointment of last season into motivation to return to the fight for the top positions.
A Premier League ready for plenty of excitement
Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool head into the new season with different stories, but one shared ambition: to compete near the top of the Premier League.
Arsenal want to defend their title, City are looking to reclaim the trophy, United aim to establish themselves among the contenders again, and Liverpool are looking to rebuild after a disappointing season.
And there is still plenty to come. The transfer window remains open until September, meaning further signings, departures and last-minute changes could still alter the balance between the leading teams.
Everything is ready for another season of the most competitive and unpredictable league in European football. From 21 August, the action gets underway again and a new race for the English crown begins.
