World Cup 2026 Team of the Tournament: The Best XI From an Unforgettable World Cup

The 2026 World Cup delivered everything football fans could have hoped for, stunning goals, world-class performances, dramatic upsets, and unforgettable moments. From the opening group-stage fixtures to the final, the tournament showcased the very best talent in world football.

Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to reveal our World Cup 2026 Team of the Tournament. Featuring Golden Boot winners, colossal defenders and midfield maestros, these are the players who defined the biggest tournament in football and left a lasting mark on the global stage.

GK: Unai Simon, Spain

Starting between the sticks is none other than Spain’s Unai Simón. The Spanish goalkeeper was one of the key figures behind his nation’s World Cup triumph, conceding just one goal throughout the entire tournament and providing the perfect foundation for their success.

There were question marks before the tournament over whether Simón or Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya would be Spain’s first choice, but that decision proved to be the right one as Simón played a huge role in helping Spain lift the World Cup.

RB: Pedro Porro, Spain

Another member of Spain’s outstanding defence makes our starting XI, with Pedro Porro enjoying an exceptional tournament at right-back. After a difficult season with Tottenham Hotspur, Porro wasn’t expected to be Spain’s first-choice option, but after getting his chance in the Round of 32, he never looked back.

The Spanish full-back was just as influential going forward as he was defensively. His superb striker-like finish in the semi-final sealed Spain’s place in the final, capping off a brilliant tournament from one of the competition’s biggest surprise performers.

CB: Lisandro Martinez, Argentina

The first centre-back in our team is Argentina’s Lisandro Martínez, who embodied his nation’s never-say-die spirit throughout the tournament. The Manchester United defender was outstanding in both defence and possession, helping Argentina reach a second consecutive World Cup final.

Unfortunately, his final was cut short by injury in the first half, but that did little to overshadow his excellent performances across the tournament.

CB: Aymeric Laporte, Spain

Joining him in central defence is Spain’s Aymeric Laporte, who delivered a composed and commanding tournament from start to finish. Partnering 19-year-old Pau Cubarsí, Laporte’s experience and leadership perfectly complemented the youngster’s talent.

A serial winner during his time at Manchester City, Laporte brought that winning mentality to Spain’s back line. His dominance in defence was instrumental in helping the eventual champions concede just once throughout the entire tournament.

LB: Marc Cucurella, Spain

Spain’s defensive dominance is completed by Marc Cucurella, who enjoyed a superb World Cup following his move to Real Madrid. The left-back impressed at both ends of the pitch, consistently shutting down some of the world’s best attackers while offering an attacking outlet.

Prior to the final, Cucurella had not been dribbled past once in five games, even keeping players like Ousmane Dembélé quiet. Going forward, he also contributed three assists, highlighting why Real Madrid moved quickly to secure his signature this summer.

CM: Rodri, Spain

The first midfielder in our Team of the Tournament is Rodri, who once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the world’s best. After missing large parts of last season through injury, the former Ballon d’Or winner returned to his very best in Spain’s victorious campaign.

As always, Rodri controlled matches from the heart of midfield with his intelligence, passing and composure. His display against France in the semi-final was a perfect example of the influence he had throughout the World Cup.

CM: Elliot Anderson, England

England’s Elliot Anderson earns his place after a tournament that exceeded expectations. Not many predicted he would become such an important player before the competition began, but his performances quickly established him as one of England’s standout stars.

Fresh from his big-money move to Manchester City, expectations were already high, but Anderson rose to the occasion. His energy, quality on the ball and maturity helped England throughout the tournament and silenced any remaining doubters.

CM: Jude Bellingham, England

Completing our midfield is fellow England international Jude Bellingham, who was undoubtedly one of the standout players of the tournament. The Real Madrid midfielder once again showed why he is considered among the very best in world football with a series of dominant displays.

Bellingham finished as the tournament’s third-highest scorer, outscoring elite forwards including Erling Haaland and England teammate Harry Kane. His all-round performances were central to England’s success and enhanced his growing reputation.

LW: Kylian Mbappe, France

The first name in our front three is Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé. The French superstar once again lit up the World Cup, scoring 10 goals and further cementing his status as one of football’s greatest goalscorers.

Although France’s journey ended in the semi-finals, Mbappé was undoubtedly one of the stars of the tournament. At just 27 years old, he added another remarkable chapter to his World Cup legacy with a series of breathtaking performances.

RW: Lionel Messi, Argentina

Few introductions are needed for Lionel Messi, who once again proved that age is just a number. At 39 years old, the Argentine legend continued to produce moments of brilliance that excited football fans around the world.

Messi finished the tournament with 12 goal contributions, the joint-most of any player, and was the driving force behind Argentina’s run to the final. Although they ultimately fell just short, his influence throughout the competition was undeniable.

ST: Erling Haaland, Norway

Leading the line is Norway’s Erling Haaland, who made an unforgettable impact at his first major international tournament. The prolific striker scored seven goals and consistently delivered when his nation needed him most.

His brace against Brazil in the Round of 16 helped secure one of the greatest victories in Norway’s football history. After waiting 28 years to return to the World Cup, Norway’s memorable run owed a great deal to the brilliance of one of the world’s finest strikers.
